China Spring 2005 - Wutaishan and Taiyuan

Wutaishan is one of the five holy mountains in China. It is the residence of the Buddhist heavenly creature called Avalokitasvara. I have forgotten his Chinese name, but the whole city of Wutaishan just waits for Buddhist pilgrims and is full of monasteries. At first a glance of the surroundings, once from a lamaist monastery and the large picture is taken above the 108 steps of the Nanshan (Southern Mountain) Monastery.

First we visited a Lamaist monastery:

Then a Buddhist monastery:

After that we visited the Baita (White Pagoda) Monastery, unfortunately the Pagoda was just renovated. So we could not take pictures. Then there was the Opera Monastery, in which I also did not take pictures. The next two were a monastery founded in the 1920s on left and the Nanshan Monastery, of which you see the entrance on the right.

The next and last stop of the day we did at the Longquan (Dragon Spring) Monastery:

The next day we went to Taiyuan, which took us about four hours. Just to have something completely different, we visited there the Jin Ci, a daoist temple. Just for your information: The nicely looking guardian sculpture is about ten meters high. Do not try to mess things up with him.
