Cyprus Spring 2004

I went to Cyprus in order to relax a bit while hiking. As there was sufficient rainfall in the winter before, everything reminded us a bit of Ireland - It was quite green around.

The first day we did a hike in the famous Avakas gorge. According to the guide a thing of two and a half to three hours. In the end it were nearly six hours. On this picture we are still quite fit.

Luckily, this one did not fall down.

After two hours we were still in the gorge, as mentioned before, not as fit as at the start. I thought that the end would be behind the next bend. Well, it wasn't.

A typical "I was there"-picture of me in front of the baths of Aphrodite. According to the legend you fall in love with the next person you see after bathing in this spring. At a certain point in time, bathing in this spring was prohited due to the complications caused by the effect. The orchids, however, have no effect on passionate feelings.

The famous place where Aphrodite was born. Therefore the middle one of the three rocks is called Aphrodite rock. A bit of the foam from Aphrodites birth still remains.

These are some impressions from some smaller villages between Limassol and Platres.

Dense forests surround the most probably largest waterfall of Cyprus - the Caledonia Waterfall.

A heritage of British colonialism. The signs look similar to the ones in Hongkong - except that the Chinese text has been replaced by Greek words.

This is an outlook somewhere in the middle of Cyprus. Please note also on which kind of street we drove with which kind of bus.

An ancient bridge over the Diarrhynchos-"Two-Root"-river. This bridge connects the provinces of Paphos on the left and Limassol on the right.

We also visited the Kikko Monastery, an Orthodox monastery, which was always favoured by plentyful gifts of the Cypriotic people. Otherwise the monks could not afford the gilded entrance and the luxurious buildings.

The quite beautiful church of Platres, which has been built directly at the rim of the Cold River gorge. Seen from the gorge. A close up gives a clearer picture.
